What Is Double Glazing?

Double glazing is a type of window construction where two panes of glass are fitted into a window and door frame with a gap between them. The space is then filled with air or an insulating gas such as argon.

This design creates a barrier that reduces heat transfer, noise, and condensation. The main benefits of double glazing are:

Thermal insulation

keeps heat inside during winter and prevents heat from entering in summer.

Noise reduction

the gap between panes dampens external sounds.

Reduced condensation

the sealed air/gas space prevents moisture build-up on the inside glass surface.

Increased security

two layers of glass are harder to break than one.

Best Glass Type For Your Project

Choosing the right glass makes all the difference in safety, comfort, and style. Here’s a quick guide to our different types of glass.

Annealed

Standard glass with excellent clarity and low cost. Suitable for basic windows, but breaks into sharp shards.

Toughened

Safety glass is up to five times stronger than standard glass and designed to shatter into small, blunt pieces for added safety.

Laminated

Security glass which is constructed with multiple layers and a protective interlayer, it holds together when broken.

What is Annealed Glass - Float Glass?

Annealed glass is a type of glass that has been slowly cooled to relieve internal stresses. During the manufacturing process, glass is heated to a high temperature and then gradually cooled in an annealing oven. This process helps to ensure uniform cooling and reduces internal stresses within the glass.

Annealed glass is commonly used in various applications such as windows and tabletops. It is less expensive than tempered or laminated glass but is also more prone to breakage. When it breaks, it typically shatters into large, sharp pieces.

Due to its characteristics, annealed glass is not suitable for safety-critical applications where tempered or laminated glass would be preferred. Annealed / Float glass is the standard option for windows.

What is Toughened Glass?

Toughened glass, also known as tempered glass, is a type of safety glass that is processed through controlled thermal or chemical treatments to increase its strength compared to annealed glass.

The tempering process involves heating the glass to a high temperature and then rapidly cooling it. This rapid cooling, known as quenching, creates compressive stresses on the surface while inducing tensile stresses in the interior of the glass. This makes the glass stronger and more resistant to breakage compared to annealed glass.

When toughened glass does break, it shatters into small, granular pieces rather than large, sharp shards, which reduces the risk of injury. This property makes it suitable for various applications where safety is a concern, such as in windows, doors and roofs.

What is Laminated Glass?

Laminated glass is a type of safety glass made by sandwiching a layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) or ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) between two or more layers of glass. The layers are bonded together using heat and pressure, resulting in a single, solid piece.

The key feature of laminated glass is its ability to hold together when shattered. If the glass breaks, the interlayer holds the broken pieces together, preventing them from scattering. This reduces the risk of injury from sharp shards and makes laminated glass ideal for applications where safety is paramount.

Overall, laminated glass provides enhanced safety, security, and other beneficial properties compared to standard annealed glass or toughened glass.

Double Glazed Configuration

Glazing configuration simply refers to how the layers of a double glazed unit are built. Each glass unit is made up of an inside pane, a spacer bar creating the insulating gap and an outside pane. The glass type and design can be varied to achieve different benefits such as improved insulation, privacy and security.
